miko Rise to Benjys Challenge
Benjys is already the high street's greatest value sandwich retailer, with over 60 shops in the South of England. Last Autumn Benjys announced the launch of its "Vanchise" - a mobile retailing franchise set to stand the mobile sandwich retailing industry on its head. The Benjys van has been purpose designed to bring great value top quality food to the business parks, industrial estates, warehouse and workshop complexes of Britain. One of the most impressive features is the Faema bean to cup espresso machine supplied by miko coffee. The decision to offer the consumer high street quality cappuccino and espresso from a mobile unit was a challenge which required a coffee service provider and an espresso coffee machine of the very highest order. Miko rose to this challenge and Benjys have been delighted with the result.
miko Wins Belgian Company of the Year Award 2003
miko is very proud to announce that we have won the prestigious title of Company of the Year 2003 in Belgium. miko is a Belgian owned group with our coffee roasting and other production facilities located at Turnhout, in the north of the country. This coveted prize is awarded annually to the company that successfully meets the very tough criteria set and in the opinion of the judges demonstrates outstanding vision, dynamism and commercial excellence. Originally 162 companies were invited to enter the competition by the pre-selection panel. This was eventually narrowed down to a shortlist of six companies and on 13th October 2003 at a gala dinner and presentation ceremony, miko received the ultimate business accolade in Belgium.
Savoy Hotel in London chooses miko
The Savoy Hotel in the Strand is renowned for its stylish setting and luxurious interior. With its sumptuous 263 bedrooms, multi-faceted dining and refreshment areas, and a talented team of helpful staff, the Savoy’s reputation for quality in every aspect of hospitality is well deserved.
So when one of the world’s finest hotels came to change its coffee service proposition the overriding factor guiding the final decision was Quality. Quality in coffee beans and taste; quality of machines; quality training; quality service and a pro-active maintenance provision.
The competition for the Savoy custom began in earnest, with miko coffee involved throughout the procedure. Part of the decision process involved a trip to Miko’s head office in Belgium where a ‘blind’ coffee tasting took place. Successfully coming through the tasting, Miko was then invited to take part in a trialling of their products over the busy Christmas/New Year period.
As a result of favourable comments from the Savoy staff, together with the smoothness of operation during the trial period, Miko won the contract to supply ingredients and install Faema bean to cup machines and Faema Traditional models in the hotel. As part of the ingredients package, Miko has developed an own-blend of coffee specifically for the Savoy. The transition to the Miko systems was a smooth and efficient procedure, with most of the installation carried out during the night to cause minimum disruption.
The Savoy utilise the Faema systems in the Thames Foyer, which serves meals and the famous ‘Savoy afternoon tea’. Other areas include the Oasis staff restaurant, the American Bar, the private dining facilities, and room service.
miko Support the Devon Air Ambulance
miko Coffee South West supported the first Devon Air Ambulance Trust Coffee Break on Wednesday 27th August 2003 by providing coffee machines, coffee and cups to a number of the charity's outlets so that the coffee could be sold to raise funds. In addition, we mailed our 850 customers in Devon, encouraging them to join us in raising the profile of the organisation by holding their own Coffee Break. We expect this to become an annual event which we all hope will grow year on year. The Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) is a local charity that relies totally on donations from the public and costs £3,000 per day to operate. In 2004 a new helicopter will be introduced which will increase running costs by £300,000 per year. The new £1.6 million fundraising target is a tremendous amount and miko Coffee South West is pleased and proud to be supporting the work of the DAAT. Since its launch, the air ambulance has flown over 6,500 missions and helped to save countless lives in Devon.
